The Rolling Stones attend Olympic Studios in London where they record Chuck Berry's "Come On" and Muddy Waters' "I Want To Be Loved". Their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham admitted, "I'm the producer, and this is the first session that I've ever handled. I don't know a damned thing about recording, or music for that matter." Mick Jagger added, "A bunch of bloody amateurs going to make a hit single."

Dusty Springfield makes her TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, singing "I Only Want To Be With You".

The Jimi Hendrix album "Are You Experienced" is released in the UK, where it would spend thirty-three weeks on the Official Albums Chart, peaking at #2. The LP contains the Hendrix classics "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze" and "Fire".

Jim Morrison incited a riot at a Doors' concert in Chicago. After writhing, jumping and even sliding maracas into his pants, Morrison had the crowd so wound up, they rushed the stage, eventually destroying it.

The Temptations performed at the White House for a ball given by President Richard Nixon's daughter, Tricia.
Mark Volman of The Turtles was reported to have fallen off the stage several times.

The Rolling Stones release the album "Exile on Main St". It includes a tune called "Happy", which features a rare lead vocal from Keith Richards. That song climbed to #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the band's only single sung by Richard's to reach that chart. The album also contained the single "Tumbling Dice", which rose to #7.

Eric Clapton recorded "I Shot The Sheriff", which will reach #1 in the US and #9 in the UK next autumn. In 2003 it will be inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.

Led Zeppelin launch their own record label, Swan Song Records, with lavish parties in New York and Los Angeles. The company ceased active operations in 1983 and now exists only to reissue previously released material.

Ozark Mountain Daredevils topped the Cashbox Best Sellers chart with their biggest hit, "Jackie Blue". The song reached #3 on the Hot 100 and #2 in Canada, but did not chart in England.

After receiving no interest from any major record labels, Metallica begin recording their debut album for
Megaforce Records on a budget of just $15,000. Originally titled "Metal up Your Ass", the LP's name was later changed to "Kill 'Em All" and would peak at #120 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Several US department stores refuse to stock the newly released Prince album "Lovesexy" because of its cover photo, which features a nude picture of him. The ban meant little to record buyers, who pushed the LP to #11 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Police arrest convicted child-killer Elmer Edward Solly in St. Pete Beach, Florida. After escaping custody in 1974, he began using a series of assumed identities, including passing himself off as Vinnie Taylor, lead guitarist of the Rock 'n' Roll revival group Sha Na Na. The musician had died of a heroin overdose in 1974, but using forged documents, including a Social Security card, a birth certificate, and a baptism certificate, Solly successfully masqueraded as Taylor. After his arrest, Solly served nearly twenty-nine years in prison, was paroled in August, 2003, and died four years later at the age of 62.

Glen Campbell pleaded guilty to charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident after he crashed into another car. As part of his plea deal, Campbell was sentenced to ten days in jail.

The surviving members of Pink Floyd took part in a tribute concert to pay respects to their former front man, Roger "Syd" Barrett, who died on July 7, 2006, at the age of 60, following complications from diabetes.

A publication called Business Insider Singapore named the 1,000 most wealthy people in Britain. The richest musicians were led by Paul McCartney, followed by the band U2, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Other rockers in the Top 20 included Sting, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Roger Waters, as well as Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

Betty Wright, the Soul singer most often remembered for her Billboard Top Ten hits, "Clean Up Woman" (#6 in 1972) and "Dance With Me" (#8 in 1978), died of cancer at the age of 66.

Rolf Harris, an Australian entertainer who reached #3 in America in 1963 with "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport", died of cancer at the age of 93. He also enjoyed a string of Top Ten hits in the UK and was named as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Sadly, he suffered a spectacular fall from grace in 2014 when he was found guilty of several indecent assaults on women and young girls between 1968 and 1986, and was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison. Released three years later, he steadfastly maintained his innocence.
